Le Ditie de Jehanne d’Arc by Christine de Pizan dates from July 31, 1429. This was during the height of Joan’s success and reflects the celebratory national sentiments toward her at this time. Earlier that month had seen the retaking of Reims and the coronation of the Dauphin Charles VII. This poem is one of only two documents written about Joan during her lifetime; the other being the records of her trial.
I believe a word also needs to be said about the author of this piece, Christine de Pizan. Christine de Pizan (1364-1430) was an Italian French author. When she became widowed in her mid-twenties she started writing to support herself. She became the first female court historian in the Court of Charles VI of France. During her career, de Pizan was very prolific and wrote about just about everything from histories and manuals of warfare to romances, poetry and prose. A signature characteristic of her writing was her defense of women. Many of her works examined the position of women in society, and she argued that women were of equal moral and social worth as men. This lead her to be considered as one of the earliest protofeminists of the Western world.
Le Ditie de Jehanne d’Arc was her last known work. The following year Christine de Pizan passed away, and Joan was captured at the Siege of Compiègne.
